Conventions of the Action genre

The Protagonist is often considered a prime male specimen with a muscular character appealing to the men in the idea of wanting to be the character and the woman with the idea of a romance with that character. The Character will often have to perform self-surgery, is intelligent, strong, tough and often has a romantic interest in which he must protect or rescue sometimes both. The sex of the Protagonist can change as the characters are easily balanced. a good example of a female Protagonist is Lara Croft Tomb Raider

The Antagonist will often be the ying to the Protagonists yang being opposite and well matched. He often will appear an intellectual equal and both have respect for each other. More often then not the Antagonist will be an old friend/associate of the Protagonist who has been betrayed or believes they were betrayed by the Protagonist or someone they must protect.

With the action genre there are many things you can expect to see. These include; Fast cars, bullets, guns, explosions, hot girls, beautiful scenery, violence and the fall and rise of the hero. These all work together to create a action filled film with a emotional attachment with the hero rising over everything that has been thrown at them.

Conventions of the Horror genre

Across a majority of horror films the common theme is pain of the physical being. most victims tend to be young attractive females or truly unkind yobs.
The conventions of mainstream horror include the supernatural, suspense, and shock scares. Creepy young children and nursery rhymes tend to fulfill a villain capacity, as well as old women, and demonic possession. torture porn is the erotication of gruesome acts. Films like Saw heavily use these styles of slasher horror.

Some of the more popular horror films of recent years, such as Paranormal Activity and REC feature a found-footage style, providing a modicum of realism which seems to attract the masses. These films attempt to portray the events as being 'real' and filmed by amateurs indicating that all the events that they experienced are a very real possibility of them happening to you.

Conventions of the Romance genre

What is true love? Does love at first sight exist? Why do all romance film portray a perfect ending.
The lead is often vulnerable, socially awkward often in a situation where they have just had a hard time romantically. He/She will fall for the unattainable member of the opposite sex. There will be something stopping them from being together most normally a love triangle.

Romantic movies can be divided into many sub-genres, the romantic comedy being the most popular, with an almost universal audience. Teen romances have distinct cliches, such as the jock and cheerleader characters, and many romances are set around a particular situation, such as a wedding or a party. Other romances can span years, such as The Notebook or time travel romance The Time Traveler's Wife.

Insidious 2 - Poster

Horror genre is that pops in to mind when looking at this poster. This would be because of the dark colours and use of isolation. This poster effects the audience as they can see a baby, left alone in a dark room, facing towards the black unknown. You are forced to wonder what lies behind the curtain of darkness.
Once you have taken in everything you can from the image your eyes drift down to the slogan and name. The slogan reads 'It will take what you love most' and now the audience are forced into the realization that the baby that the image features is going to be the main target for whatever creature this film is going to feature. Not only that but you get a sense of what this film is like just form the name... Insidious-Proceeding in gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects. Treacherous; Crafty. Giving the audience the feeling that the no one within the film can be trusted.

The USP of the film would be that it is a part of a previous film, meaning that it is going to appeal to the audience of the people who watched the previous film, but not only this it is going to reach out to horror movie fans as most horror films focus around more matured victims, but now they are focusing on attaching the audiences human need to protect and comfort, they see that the child is in danger and are immediately effected

Norbit - Poster

Norbit's poster features a white background meaning that the few things that they do use colour for stand out a lot more to the audience. The use of bold letters draws the attention of the audience to particular facts such as this film is another one of Eddie Murphy's iconic film in which he plays two of the main characters.   Eddie Murphy has been known for his roles in film where he plays more than one character,  The Nutty Professor.
Murphy is known for his comedic roles in all his films, with such films as Haunted Mansion, Dr. Dolittle, also with his vocal role in the Shrek films.

The film feature the USP that two of the main characters are played by the same person, this appeals to the audience as they like to see how this has been done and how it works our when it comes to the characters interacting with each other. As well as this people are appealed to a comedy film as it means that they can relax and not have to worry about a complex story, and the stress of everyday life. They can enjoy themselves for an amount of time with no worries.

The release date, February 9, of the film mean that it would have been going into cinemas at the same times as such films like Hot Fuzz, Epic Movie and There Will Be Blood. Hot Fuzz and Epic Movie are both of comedy genre meaning that Norbit would have had some competition at the box office.

A-Team - Poster

From the poster we are strait away made to believe that is going to be an action film. This is done by seeing such things as guns, dog tags and not to mention the two helicopters that are flying in the background.
The poster has chosen to feature the four main characters as their main focus, this means that either the actors of the characters play an important part in the films USP. The actors featured are Liam Neeson, Bradly Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copely. Each name has been known for their roles within action films, Neeson is known for his iconic roles in Batman, Star Wars, Taken and more. Jackson has been in action films such as Never Surrender and Bad Guys, bringing his big build into the film, adding the character that every military force needs. Copely was in District which is an iconic action film that many people would have at least known about. Finally Cooper hasn't been seen in many action films, but he is known for his roles in such films as The Hangover, meaning he will be able to bring humor to the film making.

The audience are able to see from some of the props that are featured within the poster, such as: guns, dog tags, helicopters and cigars. All of these items connotates to the audience the idea that this film is going to focus around the theme of war. Allowing the audience to understand the kinds of thing that they can expect to see within the film.

Identity Thief - Poster

The Identity Thief poster shows the two main characters of the film, one looking worried and the other looking relaxed and happy. From this we can tell that they are each going to have an effect upon the other.
We can see from the man (Jason Bateman) that he is dressed in a suit, this gives the idea that he is a business man, this gives the idea that he is boring, doesn't know how to have fun and focuses on his work. While from the woman (Melissa McCarthy) we can see that she is dresses casually with a drink in hand, this gives the idea that she is the exact opposite to the man.

The slogan for the film says 'She's having the time of his life' from this we now know who is who, she is obviously she identity thief and unfortunately for the man, he has become her next target.
This gives the audience the idea that they are going to be jumping back and forth from each character seeing how the sudden change in money is affecting each of the characters. From Diana (Melissa McCarthy) we are shown a party like life with out a care in the world, while from Sandy (Jason Bateman) we see his struggle to get his money back and track down this offender.

The poster being colorful gives the idea that the film is going to be light hearted and fun. The kind of film that you don't have to fully focus on because of the complex story, but the kind that you can just relax and watch at your own enjoyment without having to worry about anything.

The Prototype - Trailer

The Prototype comes under the genre of Si-Fi

The Si-Fi genre gives it's viewers that look into something at the current time seem impossible. It want's the audience to be able to use this as an escape from the everyday world and look into a subject that produces amazement and awe.

The trailer opens with a dark feeling to the film. The opening logo is shrouded by shadow and in accompanied by the constant echo sound. This gives the sense that the film focuses on the subject of hidden agenda and deceit. The focus of the film revolves around a military droid which has escaped from a military base and is currently on the run and hiding. The narration that accompanies the clips of the droid tells the audience that the reason for the droid to be running is because of a malfunction. Later in the trailer we get the sense that this is just a cover up for the truth that lies behind the machine. This is because of short series of clips that show the droid looking at itself in a mirror and examining it's body in a very confused manner. As well as this the phrase use 'Man will become Machine'. This gives off the idea that the droid was once a man, and from his reaction to his current situation allows the audience to interpret that this has happened against his will, or not to his full knowledge.

We also see that the droid shows human characteristics, such as love. As shown by him sitting by a woman who is asleep in a hospital bed, holding her hand. These aspects allow the audience to view the droid as a human and are now able to sympathies with it. Now that the audience can connect to the main character the trailer wants to bring you into the more high action sections of the film, now he has been found the chase begins, as the danger is now increased on both sides. We know that the military are not going to give up until they have either destroyed or captured the droid, but we also know that this droid is driven by the human instinct to survive, with the added bonus of being a weapon.

Prisoners - Trailer

Prisoners comes under the genre Crime/Drama/Thriller.

The main job of a Drama is to give the audience a subject that has a deep effect upon them. This is going to cause the audience to have a connection with what they see in the movie.
The job of a Crime film is to give the audience a sense of danger, with also the added plot of pursuing the criminal.
Finally the job of a Thriller is to effect the audience in a way that keeps them on the edge of their seat with anticipation.

The trailer open with a man and his family going to a house for Thanks Giving. This sets the audience in a situation which they are easily going to be able to relate to, this establishes the equilibrium. Now that they have made that relation to the audience they are going to be able to have the most effect upon them as what they now show is going to be able to affect them directly.
The children are shown going out to play, this makes means that the children are now vulnerable as the parents are not watching them. As a van drives along the street they introduce the music which fits the mood of vulnerability and foreboding. Now the parents realize that the children haven't been seen for a while and begin to question where they are, next we are told that they were seen playing on the van in which came alongside the music. This is where the audience now know what has happened before the characters. We now know that the Equilibrium has been broken.
This story plays on attacking one of the main focuses of human nature, to care for something. As humans we look to be able to take care of something and protect it, and when we see someone who is in a situation where they con no longer care for something it has a direct effect upon the audience.
As this is a trailer we know that this will not show the end result of the film where either the equilibrium has been fixed or weather it remains broken. This appeals to the audience as this brings up the main question of 'what happens?' this is the main aspect the a trailer wants to evoke because human curiosity is something that is going to drive the audience.

Riddick - Trailer

Riddick is an Action/Si-Fi film.

There are a few USPs from Riddick, one of which would be the actor Vin Diesel playing the main role of Riddick. Vin Diesel has been known for his many high budget, fast paced action films such as: Fast and Furious, xXx. This gives the film the advantage of having an action movie star as their lead role, allowing the film to reach out the fans of the actors as this means that the film will be appealing to more than just people who enjoy the story. Another aspect to this film would be the fact that is it apart of a trilogy. Riddick is the third film following The Chronicles of Riddick and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. This means that the film is going to have a huge reach out to the fans of the Riddick trilogy.

The begging of the trailer shows a bird like creature flying over a rocky wasteland, this sets the location of the film to the audience as we now know that Riddick is going to have to deal with more than just Bounty Hunters that are pursuing him, but also the harsh environment, but as people who have seen the previous Riddick films would know, Riddick is a man who can survive nearly anything. This means that the audience are raised with question "how is Riddick going to use the environment against his enemy's? or how is it going to challenge him?"
Riddick has a defined dress code, he is always seen with his signature goggles, which are most likely used to protect his eyes from the harsh sand storms that are likely to appear out in the sandy, rocky wasteland. Also known for his glowing silver eyes, we know that these give him the ability to see in the dark, meaning night is when he is at his most dangerous. As we see from the trailer Riddick is a strongly built man, meaning the audience are expecting a lot of high action fight scenes and moments when pure strength are used, but now we add in his ability to be able to use the darkness against his enemy's we now get the aspect that stealth will be a highly used aspect.
We open to Riddick narrating "I don't know how many times I've been crossed off the list and been left for dead." this allows the audience to get that full feeling of how indestructible Riddick is but also adds to the story, does being 'killed' this many times mean that Riddick had a personal vendetta against these people? adding question are the main aspect of a trailer which is going to be able to bring the audience in as we crave knowledge. We've asked the question, now we need the answer.

Pacific Rim - Poster

The poster features a large machine/robot standing within water the size of the robot is indicated with the fact that we can see helicopters that appear extremely small in comparison. within the background of the poster we see another large robot that is different to the main robot. by this fact we assume that the closer robot is the main character within the film.

The poster is clearly showing the use of Computer generated images (CGI) and for that reason we are led to believe that CGI will be a major part of the film. This is a good way to excite the audience though could put of people that do not like CGI when there is infact some really good acting within the film.

The poster indicates that the genre of the film will be action. This is through the use of robots and helicopter with rain all around them. even though there is no direct references to the military, we are given the idea that they willbe involved in some sort of way.

The main title of the film is located at the bottom of the page and is presented in capitals throughout the title. The title is in a white/silver colour and really stands out from the dark blue/black background it is up against. This helps to make the title of the film really stand out to the audience and will be the second thing that there attention is focused on after the main image in the middle of the poster. The contrast of colours between the title and the background really make the title visible. Just behind the title text is an orange "tear" in the page, which may have something to do with the plot of the film. Whether that tear is there for a plot reason or just to make the title look better, it does make the title look better non the less, which also helps to make the poster look more attractive to the audience.

At the bottom of the poster we can see the institutional information and the release date. The release date is in a white text which helps it to stand out from the dark coloured image behind it. This means that the release date of the film is really clear to the audience, hopefully making them more likely to go and see the film at the cinema. The institutional information however is really small and in a darker colour font making it blend into the background image a lot. This is most likely done because the audience does not really care about the company that makes the film, as long is the film is good, so by making that information smaller and blend into the poster more, they can make the poster look more clean and give the audience the information that they want, whilst still giving credit to the people that worked hard on making the film.

Lastly the Phrase 'GO BIG OR GO EXTINCT' prepares the audience with another indication of a major action/fight scene. this also tells us that these robots or Jager's as they are properly called are in fact the protagonists of the film.
