The trailer for Safe Haven starts off by setting up an Enigma Code, the narrative straight away wants to hook the audience, so they start off by offering a question to us, 'Why is she running and who from?' this is a method that all trailers use. This is because nothing makes someone want to watch a film more than to find out what the answers are.
Once this question has been set up we move on to the life that this woman has tried to escape too. This gives us the state of equilibrium. Allowing us to get an idea that she can start a new life, and attempt to hide from her past. But as an audience member we all know that hiding from your past in a film never works, it will come out and it will effect how the film moves on. But within this moment of equilibrium we see that there is going to be a love story between this woman who is hiding from her past and a man who has bad history as well, this gives the idea that they can use each other to fill those wholes which have been created by their past.
Now we move on to the disruption of the equilibrium this is when we see that the police that are tracking this woman have found her and are now looking for her in this town. This is going to have a huge impact on all the people that she now hold close to her as she has hidden this part of her life from them, this also allows us to know that this is going to have the most impact upon her lover.
The recognition of the disruption is shown by the woman's friends (who is the only one in the town who knows about her past) tells her that the people who are looking for her are in the town and that they know she is here. This allows that audience to now begin to see how this is going to effect her new life. The atmosphere completely changes, before the recognition the trailer gave off this happy feeling due to the idea that she is going to be able to start her life again and have a new chance at happiness with her new lover. But now we get the sense of panic, this is show by now the short clips shown of the trailer have a lower-key lighting than the ones used in the previous clips. This gives the audience the feel of her past slowly beginning to take over her new life. The woman is now faced with the fact that she now has to tell her lover the truth about her past.
This leads to him telling her that he is not going to let her go and that he will help her sort this problem out. This is the attempt to repair the disruption. We now know that the film is now going to consist of them hiding her from the police and them both trying to find a way to getting the police to leave her alone. Of course as the audience we know that this is not going to be simple as that would not provide the audience with much entertainment.
And of course because this is a trailer it is not going to show or hint towards what/if there is a reinstatement of the equilibrium. This is because, being a trailer, it does not want to give you the answers to the questions that are going to bring you in to watch the film. The questions are the line connected to the hook that is going to reel you in.
The narrative of the trailer seems to show in chronological order, starting with showing the event which causes Katie Feldman to flee her home and seek a new life. We then see her arriving at the location where the film will be mostly set, a town in North Carolina called Southport. This is where she meets a new friend, Jo, and then later meets the love interest Alex Wheatley. This sets us up with the typical romance story of: boy falls in love with girl, girl tries to fight her feelings for boy, they go on a date, girl allows herself to fall in love with boy. Which in doing so now create a relationship that the film can play with, this is done by the police who are chasing Katie find out that she is living in Southport and they are now their looking for her. This means that Katie is faced with the fact that she now has to tell Alex about her past and why she is being chased by the police. Causing disruption between the couple. But because of their love Alex stands by Katie and helps her find a way out of her problem with the police. From all of this the audience understand that the key theme of the film would be the love between Katie and Alex.
The setting of the film is in a small town in North Carolina, and the time of the film is contampary with the release date of the film, 2012. This makes the film modern and appealing to a wide audience as they will be able to relate to some of the things that they can see within the film, such as the clothing, cars, ect.
The set for this film seems to be more of a shot on location film, meaning that scenes were shot at the place of which the film is set, rather than a set being built. This means that the film is able to look more realistic as people will be able to recognise the scenery and such.
